General Motors India is planning to launch small SUV in India which aspires to attain domestic sales of 200000 vehicles in the next five years. General Motors has a strong market presence in China and it sells over a million of vehicles annually with a wide variety of segments. General Motors has planned to launch low-cost Chinease vehicles in India and might assemble them here instead of importing them to avoid import taxes.

General Motors is planning to launch small SUV and low-cost pick-up trucks. General Motors Vice President (global sales) Jonathan Browning said, “We are focusing on small and mini cars that will form a vast majority of the total domestic sales with more models under the Chevrolet brand. We are also planning to expand our presence in other segments and may launch small SUV and one-tonner pick-up truck from Wooling Motors to get some additional micro-numbers. India is a potentially large auto market and we look forward to utilise all opportunities to make our presence strong in the next five years.”

General Motors India is also working for an array of alternate technologies like biodiesel, LPG, CNG and electric vehicles. “We are working on an alternate propulsion system to have the right technology for India. We are also testing bio-diesel in our vehicles to move forward with the alternative fuel space. It might take some time and meanwhile we will launch CNG and LPG technology in our vehicles,” General Motors India president and MD Karl Slym said.

The company has recently launched a special “Muzic Edition” of its hatchback car, Chevrolet Spark, priced at Rs.3.27 Lakhs (ex-showroom).

General Motors sold 31600 units of Chevrolet Spark that is almost half of its total 65000 units sold in 2008. The company has planned to launch two more cars India this year - Cruze and the unknown small car based on Beat concept.
