The ARAI (Automobile Research Institute of India) has certified that the Tata Nano will give a fuel efficiency of 23.6 kmpl (under standard test conditions), the highest among all petrol-run cars in the country. Maruti’s A-Star, which held the top spot in fuel efficiency so far, now comes second with a certified mileage figure of 19.6kmpl. The third spot is shared by the Maruti Alto and the Hyundai i10, each returning a mileage of 18.1kmpl. Fuel efficiency is the single most important factor that determines most Indian consumers’ choice of cars. Maruti Suzuki has, for years, made cars with the highest fuel efficiency in the country. With the coming of the Nano, however, the balance seems to have tilted in Tata’s favour. Among diesel-run cars, Hyundai’s products are known for their high mileage, particularly after introduction of the common rail direct injection technology.
