Reva LogoReva Electric Car Co. Pvt. Ltd (RECC), India’s first manufacturer of zero-polluting electric vehicles, will set up a new nature-friendly plant in Bommasandra, Bangalore.

The plant will harvest rainwater, use natural light and tap solar power.

According to the company, the new plant is being planned in keeping with the company’s green pledge for a pollution free world. Though the plant may not touch zero-pollution levels, the company is making efforts to reduce energy and emissions.

The Reva plant that will be set up with an investment of Rs 30 Crore will have a capacity to manufacture 30,000 cars a year. The company has said that around 20 per cent of the total investment would go towards green initiatives.

The factory walls of the Reva plant are being made of polycarbon honeycomb. This is tough plastic with cavities inside to let in diffused natural light and keep out the heat.

Further, the plant will have a high ceiling, which will bring in ample ventilation and would need fewer fans. The roof of the Reva plant will have ventilation spots that will allow air and light in, but won’t let water drip, they said.

With a stress on rainwater harvesting, the factory will have a capacity to harvest as much as 21,500 litres of rainwater in 15 minutes and store as much as 65,000 litres.

This harvested water will be used through the year to wash vehicles and for horticulture.

Besides these, solar panels will be used to charge the electric vehicles and waste will also be segregated, recycled and composted to nurture the plants at the site, said a report.

In the meantime, Reva Electric is working on finding an alternative to diesel generators. Reva engineers hope to tap solar power and battery power instead of diesel generators.

The new plant will produce electric cars for the domestic as well as the international market.

The Reva is a 3-door hatchbook with an electric range of 80 km (50 miles) on 8 hour charge, and a top speed of 80 km/h.
