Maruti Suzuki India is planning to increase the capacity of the diesel engine by one Lakh units as part of its Rs 9000 Crore expansion plan. The company is following the success way on the diesel version of Swift and Swift Dzire and to the replicate the same to the upcoming premium hatchback Ritz to be launched on 15th May 2009.

Maruti intends to redirect its export capacity in diesel engines for the domestic market. Earlier, these engines used to be exported to Hungary; due to decrease of the demand the company wants to change its route on diesel engines.

Maruti Suzuki Swift petrol model has a waiting period of 2-3 weeks and the Swift & Swift Dzire diesel engines have a waiting period of 3-5 months.

Maruti Suzuki Swift sells around 9000-10000 units a month and Dzire sells around 6000-8000 units. The upcoming model Ritz is based on the Swift platform will be catered with a 1.3-Litre diesel engine.

“We are trying to further increase capacity of diesel engines. We can tweak production based on demand,” said Mr. Shashank Srivastava, Chief General Manager, Marketing, Maruti Suzuki.

Last year, the company exported 20,000 units of engines to Hungary. “But with demand in the European market low, we will be able to use some of that capacity for the domestic market,” said Mr. I.V. Rao, Executive Officer, Research and Development at Maruti Suzuki.
