As we said earlier, General Motors has recently said that its proposed mini-car, to be launched in India by the year-end, will have more than 80% localization.
“A hundred per cent localization is not possible. But, the small car will have in excess of 80 per cent local inputs,” General Motors India President and Managing Director Karl Slym told reporters here.
The small car will be exactly fit in the upper end of the small-car segment which comprises a significant part of the country’s total passenger car sales.
“The price of the proposed small car will be in the range of Rs 4 lakh,” Slym said, adding that it would be developed on the platform of its concept car Beat.
General Motors India would manufacture the small car at its Talegaon facility in Maharashtra from where exports would also be done.
GM’s Talegaon facility currently produces 45,000 vehicles a year against the installed capacity of 140,000 units a year. The company has its second Indian manufacturing facility at Halol in Gujarat. This has an annual capacity of 85,000 units.
The company, he said, would also launch luxury sedan Chevrolet Cruze in September in India.
