Mercedes Benz which recently launched the M Class in India has aims to sell around 100 units of its cars in the eastern part of India. The company said it sold around 82 units in the eastern part in 2008 out of which 18 were sold in Orissa. The company has recently appointed a sales representative dedicated to the Orissa market and a new showroom in the state is also on the cards.
Hiteshwar Singh, CEO, Interkrafts (exclusive dealer of Mercedes-Benz cars in West Bengal and Orissa) said “Customers in Bhubaneswar are looking for a larger range of premium cars to choose from and the new M-Class meets their need. The new M-Class is a combination of stylish luxury with uncompromising high performance, excellent off-road capabilities and best-in-class safety standards.”
It may be recalled that Mercedes-Benz India, MD & CEO Wilfred Aulbur, had earlier indicated that the future prospects for his company and the auto sector in general look good with a stable Congress-led government at the Centre. Aulbur was of the opinion that the luxury car market was growing in India at slow pace but the increase compared to the past ten year has been significant.
A leading player in the luxury car market in the country, the company will be investing about Rs.150 Crore in expanding its sales and service network across India and will be zeroing in on the C and S class models, with a large chunk of them will be pumped in by its dealer’s pan-India. Mercedes sold around 4,000 cars in 2008, the highest by any luxury car maker. The biggest markets for Mercedes in India are Delhi and Mumbai and together the two cities account for 45-40 per cent of the car makers total sales.
