Nissan Motor company has denied launching the Infiniti brand in Indian market. On the other side, Toyota has not decided yet to launch the Lexus brand and Honda also said no to Acura brand in the near or medium term.
The main reason behind it is the high import duties as CBU (i.e., we end up paying more than 100%) a tiny demand for such car that will head expensive spare parts and to certain extent infrastructure bottlenecks.
Nissan luxury brand “Infiniti” has grown in the markets include the Middle East, South Korea, Russia, Switzerland, China and Ukraine. Infiniti began sales in additional European markets in late 2008.
Nissan Motor Company has said India is a very critical market for the company in the long run and all its investment plans and product launches are on track. The company is betting big on the Indian market and it will launch nine models in the India by 2012 out of which five would be made locally to get around 5% market share. By that time it will also ramp up its employee strength to 3,000 and will have 55 dealership outlets.
The company would also source local components in large amount and its cars would have 85 per cent local content in phases. Furthermore, Nissan also plans to earmark India one of its key manufacturing locations for its compact cars, which include products such as Micra. The chief reasons cited by the company were low-cost advantage, vast pool of talented workforce, engineering expertise, etc. The low-cost, but trained manpower, thousands of component makers and easy access to growing markets make India an attractive destination for small cars. To begin with, India will be an export hub for compact cars for many countries, especially for Europe from the second half of 2010. Nissan which is scheduled to unveil its revamped Micra in March 2010 at the Geneva Motor show plans to launch the same in India after a couple of months.
“Low operational costs and the growing importance of India in compact car manufacturing make it an attractive proposition to make India a hub,” K. Tokuyama, MD & CEO, Nissan Motor India told reporters recently. Nissan has said it will invest close to 350 billion yen this year across the globe and India may get a major chunk of the investments, Tokuyama said, without providing any details. It will be followed up with five more models in three years, including an entry-level car, commercial vehicles to high-end sports cars and sedans, an official said.
It was reported earlier that the Indian arm of the Japanese automaker is establishing a Rs. 4,500-crore car-manufacturing facility (on 640 acres) with Renault at Oragadam near Chennai, where it will be rolling out next-generation A-segment car- to be christened Micra or March. The Micra would be available in both petrol and diesel versions, with nearly two-third of its production earmarked for the overseas markets.
