Skoda Auto India recently announced that it is looking to increase its Fabia premium hatch production by utilising its sister company, Volkswagen’s plant in Chakan near Pune.
A senior official of Skoda Auto India was quoted as saying to the aforesaid business daily that the new manufacturing facility of the group company has brought flexibility to its production lines both at Aurangabad and Chakan. The representative also stated that Skoda is aiming to clock over 10,000 Fabia’s by next year while also focusing on clearing the backlog for the Laura and the Superb ranges of sedans.
It was earlier reported that Skoda Auto India will localize from 5-7% to 50% in a phased manner that will help the customer receive more features rather than passing on the reduced input costs to customers. At present, Fabia is installed with two airbags and later it will be add features such as ABS as standard equipment.
“We now source components like wheels and horns for Fabia from local vendors and are looking at taking this up to over 50 per cent in the next two years. That will give us a definite cost advantage,” said Thomas Kuehl, member, board of directors (sales and marketing), Skoda India told reporters more than couple of months earlier.
