The Indian automobile industry has taken different shapes over the past few years. Each year the new cars are on the trend that been established in the previous year. When we look forward to 2014, one can expect more cars in those areas, which were a huge success in 2013. One particular area has seen massive growth in 2013; is the compact SUV section. There is a massive fight for the winner in this segment. We are going to see the top 5 upcoming compact SUV to be launched in India between 2014 and 2015.
There have been winners in this category, such as, Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport, Nisan Terrano and Mahindra Quanto. This new trend of was so popular with the masses, that now the big guns like Volkswagen, Honda, Hyundai and Tata are going to join the action in 2014. Let us look at some of the cars one can look forward to in 2014,
1) Chevrolet Trax
Chevrolet is on a bit of an aggressive strategy in India, after launching the MPV, Enjoy in 2013 it is going to strengthen the position in SUV’s even more by launching Trax. Trax is already been hit in several European countries, and India is going to be one of the first destinations in Asia. On the outside, it looks like a typical Chevy and looks fall similar to the Captiva from the front. The car expected to have two petrol and one diesel variant and expected to have an all-wheel drive version too. The expected price of Trax is 8-12 lacs, and straightaway targeted against Renault Duster. Chevrolet has indulged in many aggressive strategies recently, like the Enjoy, and the Sail, but actually their campaign has not been going well in India lately, this could well be the game changer for them. This car expected to launch sometime in the early part of 2014.
2) Volkswagen Taigun
Volkswagen tends to bring classiness and technology in each segment it enters. In addition, there were no surprises to see a VW in the upcoming list too. The structure of the car looks boxy and but it is very unique at the same time. The front boxiness of the car sure carries some resemblance with its big brother Touareg. The car is expected to be in the sub-4 metre category, which makes it similar to the EcoSport, but the expected pricing is 2 lakhs more than Eco Sport’s cost. This is because VW is going to spend all the money on providing luxuries to the customers. One can expect the car to be more luxurious, more equipped and more economical than the rivals can. The car expected to have LED lamps and a split tailgate (just like a Range Rover). The car is expected to weigh below 1000Kg’s, and should have a specially developed 1.0L TSI engine churning out 110BHP, and 175NM of torque which would be sufficient to take the car from 0-100kph in 9.2 seconds. This can be a serious challenger for all others. This also expected to launch in early 2014.
3) Tata Aria Compact SUV
Never has there been a segment for common masses in India, where Tata has not tried its luck in. Being an Indian company, they have earned their reputation by building cars specifically tailored for Indian people, but none of their cars has been able to lead the segment. This car is expected to have the same 1.3litre MultiJet engine from FIAT, but will be having power in excess of 110bhp. The styling as seen totally based on the Manza and the Indica, and the car is in sub-4 metre category.
4) Hyundai ix35
Hyundai’s ix35, which expected to launch sometime in the early phase of 2014, has already been a big success overseas. The car has been thoroughly tested in the European markets and conditions and is all set to take on the Indian market as well. From the outside, it looks just like a raised Verna. The front grill and lights sure indicate of that. The design is again Hyundai’s trademark, fluidic design that has been a hit in India. The car would have an updated version of Grand i10’s 1.1L petrol engine and for diesel; it would share the engine with Verna by having a 1.6L CRDi engine. While there may not be any surety regarding the success of others, one thing is for sure, that this car would do better than others due to the brand image it already has.
5) Maruti Suzuki XA alpha
There is no segment in the Indian market below the price range of 10 lakhs, where Maruti Suzuki has not left its marks. They were probably the first ones to introduce the concept of compact SUV’s in India, when the introduced their concept by the same name in the previous Auto Expo in 2012. However, with overgrowing demand for these cars, we would have been shocked not to see a Maruti leading the segment. Sure they do not disappoint as in the early phase of 2014 they would be coming out with the XA Alpha. The styling not expected to be the same as the one shown in 2012. The car expected to be based on Swift’s platform, which already makes it much easier. The car expected to share the engine too, if the weight does increase then the engine would be tuned but same 1.2L petrol and 1.3L diesel is to be added.
Overall, the fight is going to get stronger next year. While some companies are going to try their luck in this category and just hope of success, but one never knows they may turn out to be winners, while some others are already in demand even before their launch. Therefore, a good competitive market is going to open up soon.
