Mahindra has just launched the next generation model of the Scorpio and the SUV has been off to a flying start. It has already clocked over 12,000 bookings in just a month and that number might just continue to rise in future too. The new Scorpio is a value for money offering and has improved vastly over the last generation. The only thing that was missing at the time of launch was the presence of an automatic variant in the lineup but it seems that tests on that variant are already underway.
The Mahindra Scorpio was recently caught on candid camera during a test and the variant that was caught was the Scorpio automatic variant. The automatic variant had automatic branding on it and had the “on test” moniker on it. The same badging existed on the previous generation Scorpio Automatic as well. It will be getting an all-new transmission which Mahindra is believed to be developing. It probably won’t get the 6-speed automatic unit that powered the previous generation and it has already confirmed that it won’t be getting an AMT transmission either.
It is fairly difficult to get diesel automatics on a budget and seeing the fact that automatics are slowly gaining popularity in the country courtesy of the mounting traffic, automobile manufacturers have started to consider automatic variants too as a part of the lineup. Doing duty under the hood of the Scorpio AT will be the same 2.2 litre mHawk engine that powers the regular variants. It has a power output of 120 Bhp and a peak torque of 280 Nm.
The transmission which may get used might be the one that Ssangyong has recently developed for its Compact SUV. It is a 6-speed unit. The competition (read as Safari Storme, Duster and Terrano) does not offer an automatic transmission so having one will surely help Mahindra take a lead over the rest. The automatic variants are expected to be priced Rs 1 lakh over the regular variants. It remains to be seen as to which variants will be getting the automatic transmission. The launch will take place in early in 2015.
