Wagon R Diesel in its third generation with 7 seats is in the works

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is one of the most popular hatchbacks from the stable of Maruti Suzuki for years. It may have been criticised on more than one occasion for its stability (read as small wheels) but the hatchback has been among the top 5 hatchbacks in the country for quite a while now. Engineers back at Maruti Suzuki have already started working on the third generation of the Wagon R and the same will hit the roads in 2017. And seeing its popularity, a 7-seat variant of the same will be launched as well which will be positioned below the Ertiga as an entry level MUV.

The Wagon R three row concept was showcased back at the Indonesia International Motor Show 2013. The same garnered a lot of attention and the ‘tall boy’ hatchback will get the same in its next generation. What will be interesting is the fact that the same will measure under 4 metres in length and will allow the company to get excise duty benefits on it. This would in turn help the company price it aggressively and make it the perfect rival to the Datsun Go+ which is also due for a launch in the country.

Annaul sales of 2,00,000 units an annum is what the company will be targeting with the new MUV. The same will be exported to Indonesia as well through CKD kits. This is the same way the Ertiga is exported there. It will draw power from a petrol motor and a diesel motor which would be another first for the hatchback. And seeing the fact Maruti Suzuki is trying to bring AMT to the majority of the cars in its lineup, the Wagon R in third generation will get the same too.

Maruti Suzuki is trying to enter new segments by the end of this decade and have its presence in as many segments as possible and the compact MPV segment is one of them. As far as the pricing of the same is concerned, expect it to cost about Rs 5 lakhs for the starting model which would be about Rs 1 lakh more than the regular hatchback variant.
