Chevrolet has confirmed that the company would be bringing in its full blown SUV, the Trailblazer and another MPV, the Spin to the Indian market in 2 years. Chevrolet is planning to launch the Trailblazer SUV sometime this year itself while the Spin might be launched sometime in 2016. Chevrolet had showcased the Trailblazer SUV at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo and announced its plans to launch its soon in India. When launched, the Trailblazer is going to rival head on head with other SUVs currently in the Indian market like the Ford Endeavour, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Pajero and the Toyota Fortuner. Like most of its competitors, the Chevrolet Trailblazer is going to have a ladder-on-frame type chassis and will have 7 seats. It is also said that the Trailblazer is going to have more space on the inside as compared to its rivals. Under the hood, the Chevrolet Trailblazer is going to get a host of engine options namely a 2.5 litre and a 2.8 litre diesel engine for the international markets. The 2.5 litre unit churns out 150 bhp of peak power and the 2.8 litre unit produces 180 bhp of peak power and a peak torque of 470 Nm. It is however not clear yet as to which powertrain would be making to the international markets.
For the international markets, the power unit gets mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox with a 4X4 part time (rear permanent, Front engaged manually in Off-Road mode) all wheel drive. To keep costs in check, Chevrolet might be considering bringing in the vehicle via the CKD route for selling in India. Additionally, Chevrolet might not offer the 4X4 wheel drive arrangement and offer a 2 wheel drive instead. Coming to the MPV line-up, Chevrolet is readying its Spin MPV for the Indian market by the year 2016. The Chevrolet Spin is going to go head to head with its rivals, the Honda Mobilio, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Chevrolet Enjoy, Nissan Evalia and the soon to be launched Renault Lodgy. Unlike the other low cost MPV from Chevrolet, the Enjoy which is based on the older Wuling CN platform, the Spin is based on the new GM Gamma II platform. The same platform also underpins the Chevrolet Beat which is already sold in India. Under the bonnet, the Spin gets a host of engine options like the 1.2 and 1.5 litre petrol engines and the 1.3 litre diesel engine for its international markets.
The Indian market has a lot of potential in the SUV and the MUV segment and it is going to be very important for GM for its Indian operations especially after their Tavera fiasco.
