The great Indian ‘unpredictability’ strikes once again, and strikes hard as a scooter has once again outperformed the country’s favourite motorcycle. Indians are known to be bike lovers and that too, small bikes with greater fuel efficiency. Until a few years ago, scooters were spotted rarely on the roads, but as the scenario is changing quite rapidly, and the Honda Activa among others have transformed the current market scenario.
Hero Honda is the favourite Indian motorcycle company and the market leader. When the company launched its highly fuel efficient motorbike – Splendor it took the country by storm and steered its way into the top selling motorbike in the Indian territory. But the recent reports suggest that the Hero Splendor is no more India’s most selling two wheelers and the spot now is taken by the Honda Activa.
In June 2015, Honda Activa sold around 1,96,913 units while in the previous year in this month, Honda managed to sell 1,44,090 vehicles. However, these two have been fighting for quite some time now in order to be at the top in the list. And the fight has been quite fascinating. Activa has registered a growth rate of over 37%, which is massive considering the fact that the vehicle hasn’t been around for long as compared to the Splendor. And more so, this isn’t the first time when a scooter has outperformed the motorcycle model, it has happened in a number of occasions before. However, it has happened for the first time in the year 2015 when a scooter has beaten India’s favourite motorcycle.
Honda, the Japanese company is currently involved in building world’s largest scooter manufacturing plant in Gujarat which is expected to start its operations by the end of the current year. This big step is the proof of the importance of Indian market and India, in general in the eyes of the company. The company has claimed that after the plant is fully operational, the sales of the scooter will further be increased due to the increased production. Hero Honda Splendor sold 1,95,108 units in the month of June this year which is just 1% increase from the previous year’s number.
Now, it is going to be very interesting to see what Hero Honda’s next move is going to be.
