Indian auto giant Mahindra & Mahindra is said to be currently busy working on a project that will be the cheapest electric SUV model in the world. The Indian SUV leader is reportedly developing the world’s most affordable SUV through the Mahindra Electric unit, which was previously known as Mahindra Reva.
It is known that Mahindra & Mahindra has been planning big things to expand its domain in the potential electric vehicle market both in India and in the global markets. As per the sources, the new upcoming Mahindra electric compact SUV model is currently known internally by its codename S107. Mahindra already has two electric offerings in the Indian market, namely the e2o all-electric entry level hatchback and the recently launched electric version of the Verito sedan. Thus, the upcoming new electric SUV will be the company’s third electric vehicle model, and a highly important project in this field. For the upcoming project, the Indian company wishes to combine its expertise in making powerful SUVs with that of electric vehicle manufacturing knowledge of Reva, the Indian electric vehicle company which Mahindra took over back in 2010. Mahindra & Mahindra certainly plans to offer several electric models to expand its electric portfolio in order to have a leading position in this field in India, where the segment is still in its nascent stage. The car major has also recently showcased the Halo sportscar concept.
Mahindra Group’s chairman, Mr. Anand Mahindra said during the company’s 70th annual general meeting earlier this month, Mahindra & Mahindra is passionately creating a future mobility system and the electric vehicles are a primary element of this. The company’s Verito electric sedan is meant to cater to the requirements of a practical buyer, while the upcoming electric compact SUV will address those who are looking for a great driving experience.
The company’s Chief Executive Officer for the Automotive division, Mr. Pravin Shah revealed to the media that Mahindra is planning the electric version of its KUV100 micro-SUV model, however nothing is finalized yet. Shah added by saying that the company is considering adding more SUV models and commercial vehicles to its electric vehicle portfolio. Mahindra & Mahindra is also pondering over the possibility of a CNG variant of the new KUV100.
It is expected that few years down the line, the Indian car market will have a sizeable segment of electric vehicles, as more and more companies are getting interested in offering their EVs in India. Ford is considering a hybrid-electric version for its next generation EcoSport compact SUV that is expected to come in year 2020 or 2021.
Mahindra & Mahindra has also formed association with two other car majors in India, namely Indian car market leader Maruti Suzuki and homegrown Tata Motors in order to jointly develop certain components for the electric as well as hybrid cars, so that the products can be made more affordable for the masses.
