After a long wait and continuous innumerable reports about Jeep’s arrival in India, the iconic American luxury SUV brand has finally come to the country. Ending the long wait of the car enthusiasts of India which lasted for about three years, Jeep has finally launched some of its superb SUV models in India. The good part is, after making us wait for so long, Jeep has started off in India with its iconic Wrangler and Cherokee SUV models.
The Jeep range for the Indian car market at present comprises of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4-door model, which is the cheapest in the range being tagged at Rs. 71,59,104. Then there’s the Grand Cherokee Limited that has a starting price range of Rs. 93,64,527, while the premium model of the Grand Cherokee Summit is priced at Rs. 1,03,39,919 and The range-topping Grand Cherokee SRT is tagged at a whopping Rs. 1,12,07,825 (all prices ex-showroom, New Delhi). Well, the superb enthusiasm regarding the iconic American SUVs for many could be overwhelmed with the shocking price tags. However, all these tough luxurious SUV models look well worth their bombs of asking prices.
More interestingly, the American SUV brand seems to be concentrating more on the luxury part of its products rather than their tough off-roading abilities and brute force. Thus, instead of a challenging or adventurous setting, Jeep chose to launch its products in India in the backdrop of a luxurious Jodhpur palace. This clearly shows that the company is aiming for the massively growing luxury car segment of India and not just any tough SUV enthusiast. So, Jeep’s target audience is the rich and adventurous lot in India who wish to beat the muddy roads in utmost style and luxury.
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited packs in a 2.8L motor that generates 200 bhp of max power and 460 Nm of top torque. It offers all four wheel drive system with diff-locks as well as off-road specific tyres for optimum off-road capabilities.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel comes with a 3.0L turbocharged mill generating 240 bhp and offers a fuel efficiency of 12.8kmpl. The top of the range Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is equipped with a massive 6.4L Hemi V8 engine making 470 bhp.
Going by the looks, although the iconic Wrangler is a real essence of the rough and tough Jeep brand, the modern style conscious Indian buyers are likely to get more attracted to the Grand Cherokee for its contemporary and stylish design without compromising on the genuine SUV appeal. The Grand Cherokee also offers a more luxurious and feature-rich interiors that the modern car buyers have a nose for, making the SUV a more appropriate buy.
Jeep has big expansion plans in India going ahead. The company will have dealership outlets in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Ahmadabad, of which the latter is already operational. In the coming months the American SUV maker wishes to open 10 dealerships and start local assembly of its Renegade and C-SUV in India.
