Indian car major Mahindra & Mahindra has big dreams regarding the electric vehicle segment and has been planning according to that ever since the company acquired the Indian electric car maker Reva back in 2010. Mahindra currently offers two electric car models in the domestic car market of India, namely the e2o electric hatchback and the e-Verito electric sedan. Moreover, the homegrown auto giant is also participating in Formula E world championship race. Recent reports say that now Mahindra & Mahindra is planning an all electric SUV.
Mahindra & Mahindra wishes to launch an electric SUV by combining its own SUV fame and expertise and the electric vehicle manufacturing proficiency of Reva. Mahindra is said to be looking launch this all-electric SUV model by the year 2020. More interestingly, the speculations also say that despite being a SUV that too with electric powertrain, the vehicle will be an affordable model.
The upcoming new Mahindra electric SUV is most likely to be a compact or a subcompact SUV. As per the sources, the electric SUV is internally known by its codename ‘S107’. Giving a clear hint towards more future launches in the electric segment of India, in a meeting the company’s Chairman, Mr. Anand Mahindra, said that if any company vehemently preparing for a disruptive future of the mobility system, then it is Mahindra & Mahindra. The Indian car major says that its recently launched e-Verito is aimed at meeting the requirements of the practical buyers, while an electric compact SUV will be meant for those looking for an engaging drive experience.
The CEO of Mahindra & Mahindra, Mr. Pravin Shah also said that the company fully intends to make affordable electric vehicles in the future. He further said that Mahindra is contemplating of adding more SUVs and small commercial vehicle models to its electric vehicles lineup for an overall sustainable mobility system. The company will concentrate on offering affordable electric vehicles for better adoption and acceptance from the buyers. Mahindra Reva will also work to solve the customer anxiety over range of the electric vehicles through continuous research and development.
Mahindra & Mahindra has been actively working on sustainable mobility by focusing on electric and hybrid technology. Apart from Mahindra, several other auto manufacturers have also expressed their interest in offering vehicles empowered with hybrid technology. India’s leading car maker Maruti Suzuki already offers many car models empowered by its smart mild diesel hybrid technology. Maruti, Tata and Mahindra have also formed an association to jointly develop electric-hybrid car components, while Ford India is also speculated to be working on a hybrid-electric version of its popular EcoSport sub-compact SUV.
Going ahead, we can certainly expect Mahindra & Mahindra to offer many other electric vehicle models along with hybrid versions. So, pretty soon one can expect to beat the muddy roads with a tough Mahindra SUV without sipping on fossil fuel and providing some relief to Mother Nature by not propelling around harmful exhausts.
